REST vs GraphQL
REST exposes resources at URLs; GraphQL exposes one endpoint with a query language

With REST you design URLs around resources: /users/42, /users/42/orders. The server decides the response shape. With GraphQL the client sends a query describing exactly which fields it needs from one endpoint, and the server resolves them. REST is simpler to cache and reason about. GraphQL avoids over-fetching and lets a mobile client ask for less. Neither is a free upgrade. GraphQL moves complexity into schema design, per-field authorization and query-cost limits.
REST vs GraphQL — Visual Breakdown
REST
- ✓Multiple endpoints (/users, /posts, /comments)
- ✓Fixed response shape per endpoint
- ✓Often over-fetches or under-fetches
- ✓Easy to cache (HTTP caching)
- ✓Great for simple public APIs
- ✓Versioning: /api/v1, /api/v2
GraphQL
- ✓Single endpoint (/graphql)
- ✓You define the response shape in the query
- ✓Fetch exactly what you need
- ✓Harder to cache (queries vary)
- ✓Great for complex frontends
- ✓Versioning: evolve schema, add fields
# REST: always get ALL user fields
GET /api/users/42
# Response: { id, name, email, avatar, bio, created_at, ... }
# GraphQL: ask for only what you need
query {
user(id: "42") {
name
email
}
}
# Response: { "data": { "user": { "name": "...", "email": "..." } } }Quick Concept Check
